Third Grade

2007-2008 3rd Grade Class - Mrs. Woolard

Bible- Bible time includes the Pledge to the Flag , a patriotic song, Bible hymns and choruses, memory verses, prayer time, doctrinal drill, and the Bible lesson its self.

Reading- Reading is one of the most important subjects taught in third grade. Students read as a class rather than in reading circles twice each day, once in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Language- Third grade language is an introduction to English. Students learn the basics of capitalization, punctuation, forming plurals, noun and verb usage, etc. Students also have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in English to creative writing. As part of creative writing, they will keep a journal and learn to write book reports.

Spelling and Poetry- Spelling and Poetry3 provides students with a new list of spelling words to learn each week.

Penmanship- Penmanship is important in third grade as students work to master cursive writing skills.

Arithmetic- Third grade students learn the fundamentals of traditional arithmetic. The greatest emphasis is on mastering the multiplication and division tables. Students also learn how to solve story problems with more than one step and how to solve measurement problems.

Science- Students study science for thirty minutes daily during the first semester. They are introduced to the wonders of the five senses, to classifying animals, and to basic weather information.

History- Students study history daily for thirty minutes during the second semester. In history, the students learn more about people in America who have helped to make our country great. They also learn about states and special people such as Pocahontas, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington Carver. Influential writers and preachers such as Billy Sunday are also studied.

Health- Health, Safety, and Manners3 is an exciting text where the students meet the “Manners Twins” and “Safety Sam“, who teach them important concepts about manners and safety.

Help Classes- “Reading Help Class” is designed to help students who need extra help in reading. The help class meets for 15 minutes each day.
